For the longest time I wanted to have the same ability my mother had with plants. My mother could grow anything, but I have the ability to kill a cactus. I have kept trying to do better, different things without success.
This year a friend who is also very good with plants gave me about eight new plants, some flowers some vegetables. I was so sure that they would be dead within weeks. But for the first time in my life my pots are green and fruitful.
I walked to my patio this morning to water my plants and thought on how things had changed for me. What did I do different? When I was trying to do things on my own I was observing my mother but never allowed her to teach me how to take care of the plants. This time I allowed my friend to give me instructions. It reminded me of the way we sometimes live our spiritual life.
Sometimes we go through life seeking God, relying only on what other Christians tell us and what we think God wants without going to the source. We wonder why things are not working when we believe to be doing the right things and when we finally go to our instructional manual (The Bible) and talk to the Lord, then we discover that we were wrong all along. Once we follow the instructions then life can change for the better.
Always remember what it says in Proverbs 3: 5-7: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
